How to Replace a Popped Air Ride Bag

Popped air ride bags are not a common occurrence and typically result from installation errors or clearance issues. Here we will cover the process of replacing your blown bag with a brand new one so in the unlikely event that you pop a bag, you can get back on the road as quickly as possible!

Tools needed for the bag replacement

  • Allen wrench
  • Ratchet and Sockets
  • Oil filter removal tool (optional)

How to remove the damaged air bag

When working on this you are going to start removing things from the top and work your way down, starting with the damping knob and locking nut. Once those are off you can remove the top hat allowing you to start removing the bag. To do this you can use your hands or an oil filter removal tool to grip the bag and start twisting it up the threads of the shock. If you aren’t with a buddy, you can put the strut into a vice so that it isn’t fighting you as you spin the bag. Do this until the bag is freed and then you are ready to put the new bag on!

Reassembling your air suspension

For the reassembly process, you are going to do everything we just covered but in reverse. Start with rethreading the replacement bag onto the shock, preferably with some Loctite on the threads to avoid any motion once your suspension is reinstalled on the car. When threading the bag down, you will notice that there is a mark on the threads from where your old bag was. Make sure you match up the new bag with the old ones position and stop threading down when you reach that mark. Once you finish threading the bag on tight, put your top hat and spacers back on in the correct order and finish everything off with the lock nut and damping knob. Congrats, your bag is now back in working order!
